"Interactive Oral and Maxillofacial Radiographic Imaging"

There are significant developments in radiographic imaging techniques and technologies for oral and maxillofacial radiology (OMFR). With the current time constraints in teaching conventional radiographic techniques and increased demand in the OMFR area, there is a need for development of novel teaching modalities. In this project, we propose development of an interactive module for teaching fundamentals of radiography along with two specific clinical applications. The module will employ 3-D interactive, surface and volume rendering to create a realistic environment for simulating clinical imaging. The system will also employ an Internet-based approach for remote and distributed utilization of its content. The efficacy of the module will be assessed using dental students at Indiana University School of Dentistry.

"Interactive Virtual Reference Desk"

I propose the creation of an interactive Virtual Reference Desk at IUPUI University Library (UL) to promote information literacy and support the teaching objectives of Indiana University. Using Web collaboration software we will emulate the experience of seeking and receiving research assistance at the library Reference Desk for library users outside the library. A Virtual Reference Desk will allow UL to offer live, interactive reference services over the Web. With it librarians can 'push' Web pages to the patron's browser, escort patrons around the Web and search databases together, all while communicating with them by chat or by phone. See IUPUI's Instant Librarian. (If this link doesn't work, wait a few seconds and try again.)

"Assessable Electronics Manufacturing Curriculum"

This project will use a combination of Oncourse, videos, projects and on-site mentors to deliver courses in electronics manufacturing. Potential students are current employees in electronics manufacturing companies, an industry anxious for focused training but without the time or proximity to send students to the IUPUI campus. The variety of methods to deliver information and mentoring will improve student retention and depth of learning. Student knowledge will be assessed using projects, written and oral reports, and tests. The pilot offering of the course will coincide with an on-campus offering of the course so the two formats can be compared.

"Plants-in-Motion: An information and learning resource for teaching plant growth and development"

An animation of a flower growing.A unique and robust resource of digital information and time-lapse movies will be created to teach the dynamic processes of plant development. The resource will be used in the author's classes and serve as Web-based resource for students to use for preparing in-class discussions and for researching out-of-class assignments. A companion site will be created for a wider audience and as an interactive activity at WonderLab, the Bloomington Museum of Science. The project will effectively engage student in depth analysis of plant growth processes and provide individuals of all ages a working knowledge and appreciation of plants.

"U.S. History Scholarship via Online Lesson Plans"

This project aims to bridge the gap between scholarly research in history and active classroom teaching. We will select new articles from the Journal of American History, the foremost scholarly journal of U.S. history, and create online lesson plans to be used in U.S. history survey courses. Each plan will include comments from the article's author, annotated primary documents intended for classroom use, and links to other Web sites with relevant materials. Lesson plans will be housed on the JAH Web site. We will complete four plans and lay the groundwork for an ongoing series to continue after the grant has ended. See "Teaching the Journal of American History."

"Development of an Interactive Multidisciplinary, Problem-Based Learning (DIMPL) CD ROM to Increase Pre-Service Teachers' Knowledge Acquisition of Behavior Disorders and Improve Instruction of Students with Disruptive Behavior"

The DIMPL project proposes to develop a CD ROM for use in Behavior Disorder special education courses to enhance learning activities provided by teacher educators to increase pre-service teachers' acquisition of content knowledge and improve positive instruction of students who display classroom disruptive behavior. Interactive audio and video components will enhance text information and sustain student interest and motivation to engage in learning. A factual knowledge inventory will evaluate the CD's effectiveness to increase knowledge acquisition and interviews will determine the value of the CD from pre-service students' perspective. Once evaluated, DIMPL can be used on long distance courses.

"Unique Opportunities: Using Distance Technology to Facilitate Access to Special Topics Courses"

A Biology of Mental Illness course has been developed and team-taught using the Virtual Indiana Classroom synchronous video system. We now have seven sites throughout the state and over 105 students enrolled. As we continue to attempt to expand the offering of this course, however, we find that we have reached the limit on how many sites can be added. New distributed education technologies, in particular the Internet, will allow us to redesign the course, and offer it without the need for "distance education" classrooms or sites. This proposal reflects a request for equipment and funding to redesign the course and place undergraduate and graduate versions of it on the Internet.
